Our nursery

Our ethos

Every child deserves the same chances to learn, and the same care, affection and respect. This is how we make that happen every day.

Every child, at their own pace

At Priory Oaks Day Nursery, we believe every child deserves the same learning opportunities, care, affection and respect. We take each child’s learning needs into account and build a foundation for learning around them. Children develop at different rates and have different abilities, so our practitioners adapt to each child and meet their needs.

Equality and openness are at the heart of a successful nursery, so we have an open-door policy. You can call in whenever suits you for a chat, or ring to talk about your child’s day if you are feeling a little anxious. Our nursery is run by creative, highly trained and knowledgeable staff who treat every child with respect and meet all their daily needs.

A warm welcome

We welcome every family into our nursery with warmth, care and love, and this carries on in our teaching every day. We greet every child with a smile, a kind word and a listening ear. We teach children that all emotions are acceptable, and show them safe and calm ways to express them.

How we teach

We teach through play, interesting and engaging spaces, and adult-led activities, using our learning threads and the children’s interests. Every child should grow and learn at their own pace, which is why our rooms are based on development as well as age.

Our learning threads give our planning its structure. We chose them around the interests of young children, drawing on many years of experience in the early years. The threads can change when needed, and we will happily follow a topic or theme a child brings to us.

Ready for life

Our curriculum is designed to get the children in our care “life ready”. We teach skills such as putting on their coats, following instructions, learning rules and routines, and communicating well. Five learning goals shape our teaching and our spaces.

Goal 1

Communication and language

Goal 2

Emotional confidence and resilience

Goal 3

Life skills and physical independence

Goal 4

Academic skills

Goal 5

Acceptance and curiosity

A space that changes with the children

Our environment is always changing. We often step back to look at the children’s needs, watch where and how they are playing, and adapt the space to suit. Our resources range from acorns, wooden logs and real-life objects to building blocks, cars and animals. We believe this mix of real-life and traditional toys gives every child the same chance to learn and develop, and to shape their own learning through imagination, experimentation and play.

Building relationships

Relationships start from the moment your family walks through the door. When you visit, the manager will introduce you to the team and give you time to talk to staff and ask any questions. Staff will often welcome your child into an activity or story time, so they start to become part of the family from that very first visit.

We keep in touch with families face to face, through written booklets, by email and by phone. This helps us build lasting, healthy relationships and makes settling in easier for your little one.

Part of the community

Working together is central to our ethos. We are an inclusive, open nursery with a strong sense of community. We often welcome visitors into nursery to share their experiences and knowledge, which plays a big part in our immersive learning. We also take the children out into the community to experience real life first hand, meet new people and share new experiences.

We love having families join us too. We open our doors for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day breakfasts, stay and play sessions, nativity screenings and much more.
